
2025 was a remarkable year for Athletics in New Zealand, and this success continues to be celebrated as three special athletics moments are recognised amongst twelve finalists for NZ’s Favourite Sporting Moment.

The shortlist includes Sam Ruthe becoming the youngest person to break the four‑minute mile, Geordie Beamish recovering from a fall in qualifying to win gold in the 3000m Steeple Chase at the 2026 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo two days later, and Hamish Kerr winning the men’s high jump at the same championships!

Public voting is now open for New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment at the 63rd ISPS Handa Halberg Awards. Fans can vote once per day. Voting closes at 8.30 pm on Monday, 16 February 2026, with the winner announced shortly after during the Halberg Awards broadcast on Sky Sport and free‑to‑air on Sky Open.
