46th World Cross Country Championships, Apalachee Regional Park, Tallahassee Florida, 10 January:
Hannah Gapes was the highest placed New Zealander with an outstanding 19th in the senior women’s 10km in 34:01. Toby Gualter ran a solid race for 47th in the senior men in 30:54.
Caleb Wagener was 39th in the under 20 men 8km in 26:12 and Scarlett Robb 48th in the under 20 women 6km in 22:15.
The under 20 men were ninth in the teams race and the under 20 women tenth.

TIMARU
Lovelock Classic, Aoraki Track, Aorangi Park – 10 January 2026
Sally Gibbs won the New Zealand senior women’s 10,000m title in 40:06.90, her fourth senior 10,000m title. She was also national marathon and half marathon champion in 2014.
Gibbs is now the outright oldest to win a national senior title at 62 years 218 days, surpassing Mike Parker who was 61 years 319 days when he won the 2015 national 3000m race walk.
It was a career highlight for 33 year old Christchurch Avon athlete Thomas Richards in winning the senior men’s title in 32:24.13. His personal best is 31:32.57 in finishing fifth in the 2024 national title.
Ethan Smolej retained the Lovelock Mile title in 4:18.58. He won last year in a meeting record of 4:06.10, after finishing second in the previous two years.
Rosa Twyford won the women’s mile in 4:49.22 from Angie Petty who dipped under five minutes in 4:59.65.
In the field events Southland’s Hector O’Rourke threw a personal best 2kg discus of 43.73m, Tyler Bratley was out to 57.21m with the 800g javelin and Kieran Sinclair-Lomax exceeded the seven metre barrier in the long jump for the first time adding 22cm to his previous best. Melenaite Havea won the shot put and the discus, throwing a PB 40.70m. Charlotte Blake second in both achieved personal bests of 10.71m and 36.17m.

Ronin Dickens won the 39th edition of the annual John Walker junior mile in an inaugural personal best of 4:14.53.
Lisa Hellyer defended her Millie Sampson under 23 mile title heading in her twin sister in a personal best 4:43.00. Sarah Hellyer also clocked a best time of 4:50.10 and Nina Chalmers was through to her best of 4:50.45 in third.
14 year old Daisy Ruthe had a massive personal best of 4:54.44 finishing fourth.
In the field Adam Leece had an outstanding day scoring bests of 15.12m in the 6kg shot, 50.06m with the 1.75kg discus and 53.18m with the 6kg hammer.
Karmen Maritz achieved bests of 13.54m in the 4kg shot and 48.36m in the discus.
