TAURANGA
Tauranga Twilight Meeting, Tauranga Domain – 3 January 2026
Sixteen year old Sam Ruthe further etched his name into the New Zealand record book setting a national under 20 and under 19 1000 metre record of 2:17.82. He also achieved further global recognition running a world’s best for a 16 and 17 year old.
The world’s youngest sub four minute miler, demolished Carl Mackenzie’s 2007 under 20 record of 2:22.0 and James Ford’s 2024 under 19 record of 2:23.48.
Ruthe went close to Peter Snell’s 1964 New Zealand resident record of 2:16.6 and John Walker’s 1980 national record of 2:16.57.
Not to be outdone 17 year old Lisa Hellyer set a New Zealand women’s under 19 1000m record of 2:45.19, eclipsing Rebekah Aitkenhead’s 2010 time of 2:45.99.
Mia de Jager (18) ran a personal best 400m of 54.19, which was also under the performance standard of 55.20 for the World junior championships.
Daniel Kits of Te Awamutu set a national Para Athlete T37 3,000m record of 11:55.21.
