AUCKLAND
15th Daikin Night of 5s, AUT Millennium Stadium, North Shore – 20 December 2025
Middle distance running sensation Sam Ruthe continued to rewrite the record books with a first up over the 5000m distance, resulting in a New Zealand under 19 and under 20 record of 13:40.48.
This breaks Christian de Vaal’s under 20 record of 13:41.17 set in Boston a year ago and Richard Potts’ under 19 record of 13:49.01 set in Auckland in November 1989. Geoff Shaw at the same age had a hand timed 5000m of 13:48.4 from a race in Auckland in January 1976.
Ruthe’s 14 year old sister, Daisy, sliced six seconds off her best 800m time in winning the B race in 2:13.47.
Sam Tanner, with an electric finish over the last 200 metres, won the senior 5000m and the Blincoe Cup for 2025 in 13:36.40 from Ruthe and Toby Gualter, who ran a PB 13:41.90. Scarlett Robb was equally impressive in winning the women’s 5000m in a career best 16:25.11 – just 0.11s outside of the World U20 Championships qualifying mark.
Joe Martin won the 800m in a best performance of 1:48.25 over Connal McLean in 1:48.36. McLean’s time was well under the World U20 Championships qualifying mark. Rosa Twyford, in a tight finish won the women’s 800m in 2:07.04.
The New Zealand women’s relay team of Madison Earley, Kendra Scally, Mia de Jager and Maia Masters set five New Zealand records in one fell swoop in the 4 x 200m relay. They won in 1:36.14 to better the standard of 1:40.00 set for a New Zealand Allcomers, Resident and National record.
Lex Revell-Lewis, Cole Yeager, Zach Saunders and Hayato Yoneto won the senior men’s 4 x 200m relay in 1:25.77. The New Zealand under 20 team of Kadin Taylor, Noa King, Rylan Noome and Kahurangi Cotterill set an inaugural NZ under 20 record of 1:26.15.

LONSDALE CUP
Olympic gold medallist Hamish Kerr has been awarded the New Zealand Olympic Committee’s (NZOC) Lonsdale Cup for 2025 after a season that delivered the High Jump World Championship title in Tokyo and the Diamond League crown in Zürich. Established in 1961, (Sir Murray Halberg was the inaugural recipient), the Lonsdale Cup is the NZOC’s highest honour, reserved for the athlete or team whose impact on Olympic or Commonwealth sport is remarkable in a given year.
It recognises excellence on the field of play and the values shown beyond it: leadership, integrity and service to the sporting whānau.
The Cup’s roll of honour includes Sir Peter Snell, Sir John Walker, Dame Valerie Adams, Dame Lisa Carrington and most recently, Dame Lydia Ko.
In 2025 Hamish Kerr produced a memorable year in men’s High Jump, winning the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with a world‑leading 2.36m jump, equally his New Zealand and Oceania record.
He had success in Diamond League events in 2025 with victories at the Rabat and Silesia meets before securing the Diamond League Final title in Zürich. Earlier in the year, Kerr also won silver at the World Indoor Championships.
