Saucony Battle in Boston, BU Track Centre, Boston MA, 22 February:
Sam Ruthe set a national under 17, 18, 19 and under 20 3000m record of 7:43.16 in finishing second in the invitational 3000m. 

The sixteen year old broke his own under 17, 18 and 19 record of 7:56.18 set in winning the national senior title in Hastings in 2025. And the under 20 record held by Liam Back at 7:54.30 set in Boston in 2021.

Kenyan Ernest Cheruiyot won in 7:40.53.

Geordie Beamish holds the national record of 7:36.22.

CHRISTCHURCH
International Track Meeting, 
Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub – 21 February 2026

Tommy Te Puni scorched to a New Zealand national and resident 200m record of 20.35. The 2021 national junior sprint double champion bettered Joseph Millar’s 2017 record of 20.37 set in Hamilton.

Lex Revell-Lewis challenged Te Puni over the closing stages, but had to settle for second in a PB 20.49. The next two Zach Saunders 20.71 and Kadin Taylor 20.87 also set PB’s.
Eddie Osei-Nketia clocked 20.24 in College Station Texas in May 2025, but was not registered with Athletics New Zealand at the time.

Tiaan Whelpton recorded his fastest 100m of 10.01 with a following wind of 4.9 mps.

Tom Walsh followed up his 20.80m shot put at the Sir Graeme Douglas meeting with a winning throw of 20.83m.

The national 3000m titles went to the 2024 5000m and 10km champion William Little and 2024 3000m champion Tillie Hollyer.

Eliza McCartney cleared a world indoor championships qualifying height of 4.70m in the pole vault held indoors at the Millennium Stadium on Friday evening.

The last time McCartney cleared 4.70m was sixth at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

James Trathen collected the middle distance double, the 1500m on the first day in 4:01.69 and the 800m on Sunday in 1:54.04.
James Steyn won the senior men’s title with 5.20m.
Alana Mathews in a solo performance clocked a PB of 55:21.16 in the 10,000m race walk.
Emkhe Joubert  in the under 18 a PB 400m 56.79 and a PB 200m of 25.25.

Ian Carter set a NZ masters M75 800m record of 2:39.92.

OBITUARY


Well known Taranaki athlete, official and administrator Gary Vincent passed away on Monday 16 February aged 84.
He was President for many years of Stratford Athletics and a foundation member of the Stratford Harrier Club.

He received an Athletics New Zealand long service award, along with Barry Webb, in 1993.
